Mrs. Marie Sumnicht

4th Grade Teacher

My Name is Mrs. Sumnicht

I'm originally from Appleton, WI.

My birthday is July 13th.

My family includes my husband Dan and three children: Stephan (22), Johanna (18) and Andrew (16).

I received a BS in Elementary Education with a French minor from Valparaiso University,Valparaiso, IN. I have attended graduate school and have earned 15 credits toward a reading license at Viterbo College, Lakeland College, UWGB, UW Oshkosh.

I have also coached various sports including basketball, cross country, baseball, track and nordic skiing. I am currently the coach of the WIS Middle School Cross Country Team.

My Teaching Philosophy:
Teaching involves understanding children academically, socially and emotionally. In order to track changes in these areas, ongoing assessment is a critical component during the school year. Assessing to instruct also insures the students will be continually challenged and learning at the appropriate level. Instructionally, the teacher's role is more of a facilitator, guiding the children with inquiry-based instruction and problem-solving skills. Social interaction skills are strengthened while students collaborate in small and large groups. Due to diverse learning styles, instruction demands multi-sensory approaches where students are actively engaged in learning. Authentic and real world content provide further inspiration to students as they work both collaboratively and individually. Due to the increasing technological demands and advances in our society, multi-media integration is necessary. The teacher-student and teacher-parent relationships are vital to the academic success of the student.

A Few of my Favorite Things!

Food: Grilled salmon

Movies and Books: Historical fiction and adventure

Colors: Olive green and blue

Quote: "No Pain, No Gain" (My interpretation: To pursue a goal or dream, it may involve effort or sacrifice)

Hobbies: Running, nordic skiing, cooking, nutrition, coaching and teaching kids

Time of Year: Winter - I love watching and skiing in big flakes of snow falling down all around me!

_________

Destinations visited: I studied and traveled in Germany (and Europe, in general) in 1983. I have been all over the US. My dream vacation is somewhere with great nordic skiing and lodging.

An interesting tidbit about me: Running a 2:58 marathon while training with a friend who was a 2-time Olympic Trial qualifier. Also, my son Stephan, won the 1st annual National Bob Hope Scholarship, announced on national tv while his band (Pulaski) was marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Biggest ambition: To live long enough to see my children's children and be a significant part of their lives.
